Mantapad does not collect, store, sell or share your personal data. There are no accounts, analytics, advertising or tracking. Everything the app does, including Studio screen streaming, happens directly between your own iPad and your own Mac on your local network. The only internet request is the Mac companion checking this website for updates.
This policy explains how the Mantapad iPad app and the Mantapad Mac companion (together, "Mantapad" or "the apps"), made by Pedro Borges ("we", "us"), handle information. It applies to the apps and to this website.
1. Information we collect
We do not operate servers for Mantapad, and the apps do not send any information to us or to third parties, apart from the update check described in section 5. We cannot see your drawings, your devices, your network or how you use the apps.
2. Information that stays on your devices
To work, the apps keep a small amount of data locally on your devices. It never leaves them except as described in section 3.
- Device identity. Each app creates a cryptographic key pair, stored in the Apple Keychain, so your devices can recognize each other securely.
- Remembered devices. After you approve a pairing, each device stores the other's name and public key so they can reconnect. You can forget a device at any time from the Mac companion.
- Preferences. Settings such as handedness, grid, appearance, pressure tuning, desktop control choices, and the shortcut toolbars and Apple Pencil actions you set up for each app. Toolbars are stored by the Mac app's name and bundle identifier.
- Practice drawings. Strokes on the iPad practice canvas stay on the iPad and are never sent to your Mac.
Deleting the apps removes their preferences. Keychain items may persist according to Apple's Keychain behavior.
3. Communication between your devices
When you use Mantapad, your iPad and Mac communicate directly over your local network. This includes device discovery (Bonjour, which advertises your Mac's name and that it runs macOS), pairing messages, Apple Pencil position, pressure and tilt, the shortcut keys you tap on the iPad, and connection timing used to show latency. So the iPad can show the right toolbar, the Mac also sends the name and icon of the app in front, and when you add a command, the names and shortcuts of that app's menu items. Connections are authenticated with the keys described above and only devices you approve on both sides can connect. No relay, cloud service or internet connection is used.
Studio mode
When you start Studio mode, the Mac companion captures the display or app window you choose and streams it as encrypted video directly to your paired iPad over your local network, so you can see it while you draw. Mantapad does not record, save or upload this video, and it never reaches us or any third party. Streaming stops when you end Studio mode or disconnect.
When you open the source picker, the Mac sends your iPad the names of your displays and open windows (app name and window title) and small preview images of them, so you can choose what to share. Previews are made only while the picker is open and are not stored.
4. Permissions
- Local Network (iPad and Mac): to find and connect to your other device.
- Accessibility (Mac): so the companion can turn Apple Pencil input and the shortcut keys you tap on the iPad into pointer, tablet and keyboard events in the app you are using, and read the menu items of the app in front when you add a command to its toolbar. The companion only produces input while you are connected and desktop control is on. It does not monitor your typing; it only sees keys you press while its own Record Shortcut window is open.
- Screen Recording (Mac): only for Studio mode, so the companion can capture the display or window you choose and stream it to your iPad. Nothing is saved.
You can revoke these permissions at any time in iPadOS or macOS Settings. The apps will not work fully without them.
5. Mac companion updates
The Mac companion checks for new versions by downloading a small update file from mantapad.com, and downloads an update from there if you agree to install it. Like any web request, this reveals your IP address and, in the request header, the companion and macOS versions to our hosting provider. It does not send a system profile or any identifier. Updates are signed by us and notarized by Apple.
6. Apple and the App Store
Mantapad is distributed through Apple's App Store. Apple may collect information about downloads, purchases and, if you opt in, crash and usage diagnostics, under Apple's Privacy Policy. If you choose to share diagnostics with app developers, Apple may provide us with anonymized crash reports. We use these only to fix bugs.
7. This website
This website does not use cookies, analytics or tracking scripts. Downloading a companion is a plain file download; we don't ask for your email or any other information. "Get notified" for Windows simply opens an email to us; we use your address only to send one email when Windows support is out, then delete it. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs (such as IP address and request time) for security and reliability, which we do not use to identify you.
8. Support email
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to write. We use it only to reply to you, and we do not add you to any mailing list. You can ask us to delete your correspondence at any time.
9. Children
Mantapad does not collect personal data from anyone, including children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country).
10. Your rights
Because we do not hold personal data from the apps, there is nothing for us to access, correct, export or delete. You control all app data on your devices. For support emails, you can exercise your rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA by contacting us.
11. Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a future feature changes how data is handled, we will describe it here before it ships.
